Gilbert John Adam Doehla
May 21, 1915 - May 6, 2012
Gilbert John Adam Doehla, 96, of rural Concordia passed away Sunday morning, May 6, at Western Missouri Medical Center. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Gilbert was born May 21, 1915 near Lohman, Missouri to parents, August A. and Bertha (Raithel) Doehla. Gilbert grew up on the farm with his older sister, Lenora, and a younger brother, Raymond. He farmed with his father for many years.
On April 6, 1947 Gilbert married Tena Strobel after a long courtship. The family lived on a farm near Russellville until moving to Concordia in 1957. Upon their arrival to rural Concordia, they knew they had a wonderful new home and community. Neighbors welcomed them with open arms and lasting friendships developed. Neighbors helped each other farm, stepped up when someone needed a new building or repair and spent many fun evenings playing cards and enjoying each other’s company.
Gilbert and Tena have lived on their Concordia farm for 55 years and have loved every minute of it. Gilbert held honesty and integrity as high values. They attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church every Sunday as long as their health permitted.
Retirement was not a word or state to which Gilbert related. But as health issues developed, doctors suggested he start visiting “the coffee shop.” He started doing just that and got so much pleasure from those early morning visits to Hardees with friends. His humor and ability to survive an impressive variety of accidents and medical conditions will be remembered.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Raymond and sister Lenora, and an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife, Tena, of the home; son, Jim, and wife, Myra, Pleasant Hill; daughter, Shirley Cleveland, and husband, Greg, Warrensburg; five grandchildren, Ashley (Cleveland) Howard and husband, Zac of Laredo, TX; Ross Cleveland, Warrensburg; Joy (Doehla) Hawkins and husband, Andrew, Pleasant Hill; Jamie (Doehla) Heck and husband, Jason, Overland Park, KS; Joel Doehla and wife, Sandra, Shawnee, KS; and three great-grandchildren, Riley, Parker and Reagan Hawkins.
