Born November 15, 1911, in Concordia, he was the son of Arthur Stumpenhaus and Lena Buesing Stumpenhaus. Both of his parents died when he was young and he was raised in Concordia by his grandparents. To help put himself through high school, he worked at Topsy’s Café for seven years. He graduated from Concordia High School in 1932. Although he wanted to go to college, he was unable because of the hard economic times and lack of funds. Later, he made sure his son Keith could attend college and his son was always thankful for this. He also helped his grandchildren with their college expenses. On December 22, 1934, he married Marion Louise James in Olathe, KS. They lived in Windsor, MO from 1934 to 1942 where he worked in a shoe factory. In 1940, he began working part time for the Murphy Products Company, joining the company full time in 1942. They lived in Lexington, MO for one year and in Braymer, MO for one year. In 1944, they moved back to Concordia. He worked for Murphy’s for 30 years, starting out as a feed salesman and being promoted to divisional sales manager in 1946. He retired from Murphy’s in 1970. He was then self-employed in the freezer beef business until 1993.

Stanley’s wife, Marion, preceded him in death on November 29, 1997, as did his son, James, on October 25, 1966. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Warner Stumpenhaus, and his sister, Frances Schmidt. He is survived by his son, Keith Stumpenhaus and his wife, Diane, of Liberty, MO;
his granddaughter, Helga Johnson and her husband, Allen, of Kansas City, MO; his grandsons, Conrad Stumpenhaus and his wife, Shannon, of Kansas City, MO and Warner Stumpenhaus and his wife Tember of Kansas City, MO; and seven great-grandchildren: Martha, Olivia, Sarah and Samuel Johnson; Jacob and Katelyn Stumpenhaus; and Brynn Stumpenhaus.

Stanley was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ for 80 years. In the late 1950’s, he was named chairman of the church building committee. His efforts along with others led to the building of a new church in 1960. He organized five investment clubs in Concordia over a period of 50 years, exposing more than 140 people to investing in the future of America. It was also through his efforts that 80 acres of depleted land was brought back to productivity for future generations.

Stanley taught his family the value of persistence, perseverance and hard work. He also taught the value of generosity by his example. He taught his family the value of education and the idea that one person, working hard and never giving up, could make a difference for the good. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
