Biography

Tom Martin, 82, of Sweet Springs, MO, died Saturday, January 14, 2012, at I-70 Community Hospital in Sweet Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Sweet Springs, with William W. Harlow officiating. Masonic services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday with visitation following from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. Memorials may be made to Barbee Lodge No. 217 A.F. & A.M. in Sweet Springs or Fairview Cemetery. Friends may sign the online register book at www.campbell-lewis.com

Born June 7, 1929, in Tompkinsville, KY, he was the son of the late James T. Martin and Bertha Bartley Martin On April 3, 1956, in Nelligan, Germany he married Wally Sterand who preceded him in death on July 12, 2005. He served 20 years in the U.S. Army receiving 15 military awards including the Bronze Star and seven Campaign Stars. He served in Japan, Korea, Germany, France and Vietnam. After retiring from the U.S. Army, he operated Hilltop Texaco from 1970 to 1982. In 1982, he established Tom’s Auto Salvage and owned and operated it until his retirement in 1994. He was a member Barbee Lodge No. 217 A.F. & A.M., Ararat Shrine, Kansas City, Sweet Springs American Legion Post 279 and was a lifetime member of the Motor Home Association.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruby Ray of Louisville, KY and Janelle Emmert and husband Jack of Brooks, KY; several nieces and nephews; and his companion Kim Edwards.
