Biography
Milton E. Tietjens, 82, of Marshall, MO, formerly of DeWitt, MO, died Thursday, October 20, 2011, in Carroll County, MO.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Marshall, with Dr. Mike Parris officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in DeWitt, MO. Memorials may be made to Arbor Day Foundation. Born November 7, 1928, in Sugar Tree, MO, he was the son of the late Elbert Estel Tietjens and Effie Marie Fordham Tietjens. He had lived in the Saline and Carroll County areas most of his life and was a 1947 graduate of Carrollton High School. On October 26, 1947, he married Martha Jane Minnis who preceded him in death on January 29, 2001. He was a farmer, tree farmer and catfish farmer. He and his wife worked as 4-H leaders for over 20 years, and were active in RYO (Rural Youth Organizations), as well as many other organizations benefiting youth. They were selected as the first outstanding farm family of Carroll County and as the Missouri State Fair outstanding family. In 1965, he was elected Carroll County Conservation Farmer of the year. In 1995, he was honored as Missouri Tree Farmer of the Year. He was always active in whatever community they lived in and served on numerous boards, committees, as well as being an officer in many of those groups. He was a board member of the Missouri Wild Turkey Federation and placed first in the National Midwest Turkey Calling Contest. He was instrumental in starting Brunswick Alcoholics Anonymous and was active in Marshall AA. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marshall and previously had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Carrollton for over 20 years where he taught Sunday school, was a Training Union Leader for young church members for 12 years and served as a Deacon for 23 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Jane Rosen and husband Dr. Fred E., of Columbus, NC and Connie Marie Ponting of Hale, MO; two sons, Daniel Milton Tietjens and wife Pat of Carrollton and Richard Minnis Tietjens and wife Cynthia of DeWitt; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Naomi Collier and husband Marvin of Carrollton; brother-in-law, Jack Owen of Carrollton; best friend, Betty Shepard of Slater, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Heins and Helen Owen.
